Sudanese model Awek covers HUNGER Magazine’s Call to Action issue in CHANEL — available to purchase online and on newsstands.
In the 12 years of HUNGER magazine, we’ve seen the world transform — for better and for worse. We’ve established ourselves as a place for the visually hungry, but we now have a responsibility to encourage meaningful change; because let’s face it, a lot of what we’re seeing is a shambles. In the UK alone, we're living through an energy crisis, a cost of living crisis, a climate crisis and a rental crisis - the majority of which can be pinned on years of governmental incompetence. That’s why for this relaunch issue of HUNGER our theme is: Call To Action.
Fittingly, our cover star is one of South London’s finest musicians, Loyle Carner. The hip-hop artist is no stranger to speaking out about important topics, including knife crime, identity, and the joy that can be found in neurodivergence. American rapper Joey Badass, also speaks to us about his artistic evolution as well as his homeland’s endless problems surrounding gun violence.
But these talents aren’t the only changemakers we’re championing. ‘The Iranian Activists Fighting for Women’s Liberation’ introduces us to Mahsa, Shadi and Diana, who have all experienced the Iranian regime’s oppressive stance towards women at different periods. Then, in ‘This is Activism’, we sit down with the likes of female rights advocate Gina Martin and fair fashion campaigner Venetia La Manna to speak about the future of activism.
Next up, someone who is no stranger to fighting the good fight is former Black Panther Beverley Bryan. She speaks to the young founders of the All Black Lives UK group about how the right to protest is under threat in the UK in ‘Be Brave. Be Fearless.’ Scottish artist Trackie McLeod also chats to his mum Cathy about his unique strain of politics — which is always delivered with a wink.
As usual, we’re committed to celebrating upcoming talent. In this issue, we chat with Frankie Corio, the 12-year-old breakout star who starred alongside Paul Mescal in the critically acclaimed film Aftersun. We then turn to our regular fixture, HUNGRY, where we highlight the standout singers, actors, artists and designers of the future. And this time around, we get to know Amazon Music’s Artists to Watch for 2023.
Finally, as if our design refresh wasn’t enough to feast your eyes on, we still have all our fashion and beauty programming. Take a moment to escape with the likes of Dior, Chanel, Akoni and Guerlain.
