Crisp Packets Down, Remotes Up: The 2026 Ad-Break Snacking Survival Manual

There is a sacred moment in every big telly night when the ad break lands and the room lunges for the snacks. Then the show returns, someone is still crunching, and the remote is wearing a light jacket of Worcester sauce. This is not a lifestyle. It is a failure of planning.

Here at Hunger TV Shop, we have watched enough live telly to know that ad-break snacking is not about willpower. It is about logistics, acoustics and whether you can open a bag of Quavers with your teeth while shouting at Ant and Dec. So here is the 2026 sofa-ready survival plan.

The three pillars of ad-break snacking

Every snack must be judged on three things. Crunch volume: how far the sound travels during a hushed cliffhanger. Mess factor: the likelihood of orange fingertips on the cushion or a crumb down the hoodie. One-handed eatability: can you eat it while holding a mug, a phone or your own head in disbelief? A snack that fails two of these is not a snack; it is a domestic incident.

The crunch-to-commercial ratio

We have invented the Crunch-to-Commercial Ratio (CCR) because apparently we cannot relax. The formula is: crunch volume plus packet rustle, divided by the length of the ad break times your chance of needing to hear a whispered plot point. A low CCR is safe. A high CCR means you will be chewing through the reveal like a guinea pig at a funeral.

For I'm a Celebrity..., the breaks are long but the tension is fizzy. You want a snack that can be opened during the trailer for a car you will never buy and finished before the jungle recap. For The Traitors, the ad-free BBC version still has pauses, and the round table demands silence. This is not the time for a McCoy's. This is Malteser country.

The 2026 UK snack rankings

Snack Crunch Mess One-handed Verdict
Quavers 4 2 9 The dependable midfielder. Quiet, light, minimal dust.
Wotsits 2 10 7 Delicious, but leaves an orange crime scene.
Hula Hoops 9 3 8 Wear on fingers, crunch like a tiny door closing.
McCoy's 10 5 6 Only for ad breaks longer than three minutes.
Twiglets 8 6 7 The Marmite of sofa snacks: crumbs and opinions.
Sweet popcorn 6 9 8 Tasty, but the sofa will look like a wedding ended badly.
Maltesers 3 2 9 Elite. Quiet, chocolatey, no orange fingerprints.
Haribo Starmix 1 1 6 Silent but chewy. Risk of losing a filling during a cliffhanger.
Sausage roll 2 7 8 Flaky. You will be wearing it by the second act.
Cheese string 1 3 7 Peeling is a two-hand job if you are panicking.

The winner is not the tastiest snack. It is the one that lets you hear the show. A sharing bag is a lie unless you are prepared to share with the person who always says 'I'm not hungry' and then eats the lot.

The ad-break blackout drill

Before the show starts, open the bag corner. Put the remote on the arm of the sofa, not on your lap. Have a napkin within reach, not in the kitchen. If you are watching live, do not start a snack that requires two hands during the final ten minutes. That is how people miss a bushtucker trial and end up explaining it badly at work.

The real skill is the silent chew. Crisps are a no-go during a whispered Traitors round table. Chocolate is your friend. If you must crunch, do it during the 'coming up' montage, when the show is basically shouting at you anyway.

The final rule

The ad break is not a race. It is a tiny window to refuel without becoming the person who ruins the atmosphere with a family-sized bag of Monster Munch. Choose quiet, choose one-handed, choose something that does not turn your remote into a greasy relic. And if all else fails, pause the telly. Unless it is live. In which case, Godspeed, and keep the Maltesers close.
